Carl Sandburg Village was the brainchild of Mayor Richard J. Daley and real estate developer Arthur Rubloff. Beginning in the early 1960s as a huge urban renewal project, the Village was built over a 10-year period and includes eight high-rise buildings, a mid-rise structure, and more than 50 townhouses - some of which are privately owned and not associated with or managed by Sandburg Village.

When completed, Sandburg Village occupied most of the rectangle defined by Division, North Ave., Clark, and LaSalle. In 1979, all the rental units went condo in what was probably the largest conversion in the country.

Today Sandburg Village is a mature residential community, its "mid-century" buildings well cared for, its residents a broad demographic. Interestingly, as many as 20% of the Alcott and Bryant residents have been there since the 60s and 70s - which says a lot about quality of life.
